These\u00a0early transitional stools\u00a0<\/a>may be brownish or greenish, and will be loose and unformed (kind of a pea soup consistency).<\/p>\n By the time\u00a0she is 4 or 5 days old, she should be having \u201cmilk stools\u201d:\u00a0Yellowish and seedy, sort of like a mixture of mustard and cottage cheese<\/a>.<\/p>\n She should have at least 2-5 substantial bowel movements in each 24 hour period, and may pass a stool every time she nurses during the first few weeks of life. If she isstooling less frequently<\/a>, it may mean that she is\u00a0not getting enough milk<\/a>.<\/p>\n Once babies pass the\u00a0newborn period,<\/a>\u00a0(4-6 weeks old), it\u2019s not unusual for them to poop every few days, or even go a week or\u00a0longer between bowel movements.<\/p>\n This\u00a0infrequent stooling\u00a0<\/a>is often a concern for new moms because they are so used to their newborn babies\u00a0pooping many times a day<\/a>, but as long as the baby is healthy and her abdomen stays soft, there is no reason for concern.<\/p>\n Constipation doesn\u2019t mean just pooping infrequently \u2013 it means that the stool is hard and dry when it comes out, and is painful to pass.
